Airport Beacon
Because our airport is operational at night (mainly for emergencies), we are required to have a beacon at night for navigation purposes. The FAA sets specifications for airport beacons and approved our new LED beacon. The beacon was replaced because the old incandescent beacon was obsolete, it was impossible for pilots to see from a distance and was extremely difficult and risky to service. The new LED beacon should need minimal service. This replacement took place as part of a major overall FAA 2024 Lopez Airport safety upgrade. I believe the many decades old beacon no longer meets current standards
The Port will check into the luminosity of the new beacon and find out what the requirements are and if a change can be made. Our findings and possible solutions when complete will be posted on the Port website.
